Beginner's Guide: Surviving Your First Day on Arrakis
1. Character Creation & Starting Stats
When creating your character, you'll distribute points across several attributes. For beginners, we recommend:
Constitution (3 points): Increases health and water retention — critical for survival
Strength (2 points): Carry more resources and deal more melee damage
Intelligence (2 points): Better crafting efficiency and spice detection range
Agility (1 point): Movement speed and dodge efficiency
Pro Tip: You can respec your character later using Mnemonic Recollections, so don't stress too much about your initial build. Focus on learning the game mechanics first.
2. Water Is Life: Managing Hydration
Water is the most critical resource on Arrakis. Unlike other survival games where food is the primary concern, dehydration will kill you faster than anything else. Here's how to manage it:
Always carry water: Keep at least 2-3 water flasks in your inventory at all times
Find dew collectors: These structures passively generate water over time — build one at your base ASAP
Harvest cacti: Certain desert plants contain moisture and can be harvested for small water amounts
Trade for water: Water Shippers and other factions sell water — carry spice to trade
Avoid midday travel: The heat between 11 AM and 3 PM drains water 3x faster. Travel at dawn or dusk when possible
Warning: Running out of water in the deep desert with no shelter is a death sentence. Always plan your routes and carry emergency water rations.
3. Building Your First Shelter
Your first shelter doesn't need to be elaborate, but it must provide:
Shade: Reduces water consumption by 50% when inside
Sandstorm protection: Fully enclosed structures protect against deadly sandstorms
Crafting stations: Workbench, furnace, and storage containers
Bed/respawn point: Sets your respawn location
Recommended starter base location: Near the Hagga Basin starting area, close to water sources and low-level resources. Avoid building directly in spice fields — sandworms are attracted to spice harvesting activity.
4. Understanding the Sandworm Threat
Sandworms are the apex predators of Arrakis and the #1 cause of player deaths. Key facts:
Sandworms are attracted to rhythmic vibrations — running, vehicle engines, and spice harvesting call them
When a worm is near, you'll feel ground tremors and hear a distinctive rumbling sound
Thumpers can be placed to distract worms in one direction while you escape in another
Rock outcrops are safe zones — worms cannot reach you on solid rock
Ornithopters (flying vehicles) are completely safe from worms but require fuel
Survival Tip: If you hear worm rumbling, immediately stop running and walk slowly toward the nearest rock formation. Running increases vibration and draws the worm faster.
5. Early Game Progression Path
Gather basic resources (stone, wood, plant fiber) around the starting area
Craft basic tools: stone pickaxe, knife, and water flask
Build a simple shelter with a bed and dew collector
Complete the tutorial missions for bonus resources and XP
Craft a stillsuit (reduces water consumption by 30%)
Establish a small spice harvesting operation
Join a guild or find allies for protection and resource sharing
Upgrade to metal tools and weapons
Build defensive walls and traps around your base
Explore deeper desert regions for rare resources

Spice Harvesting Guide
What Is Spice Melange?
Spice melange is the most valuable substance in the Dune universe. In Dune: Awakening, it's the primary currency and crafting material. Spice extends life, expands consciousness, and enables interstellar travel. On Arrakis, he who controls the spice, controls the universe.
Finding Spice Blooms
Spice appears on the surface of the desert in concentrated blooms. Here's how to find them:
Visual cues: Look for orange-golden shimmering on the sand surface
Spice detector: Craft and equip a spice detector to highlight nearby blooms through walls and terrain
High-intelligence bonus: Higher INT characters can detect spice from further away
Deep desert: Higher-tier spice blooms appear further from safe zones — but so do bigger worms
After sandstorms: New spice blooms frequently appear after major sandstorms pass
Pro Tip: Spice blooms emit a faint golden glow at night. Night harvesting is riskier (worms are more active) but the visual cue makes finding blooms easier.
Harvesting Techniques
Harvesting spice is dangerous — the vibrations attract sandworms. Master these techniques:
Scout first: Before harvesting, check the area for rock outcrops you can retreat to
Harvest in bursts: Harvest for 10-15 seconds, then stop and listen for worm rumbling
Use thumpers: Place a thumper 50+ meters away to draw worms toward it instead of you
Team harvesting: One player harvests while others watch for worms and provide covering fire
Escape routes: Always have an escape plan — mark nearby rocks on your map before starting

Base Building Tips
Layered defense: Build walls in concentric rings with traps between them
Elevated platforms: Place critical crafting stations on raised platforms — harder for raiders to reach
Hidden storage: Bury chests under fake floors or behind false walls
Multiple exits: Always have at least 2 escape routes from your base
Decoy bases: Build a small, obvious base with minimal loot to distract raiders from your main stash
Building Tip: The Water Shipper building set (from Update 1.4) offers excellent wind resistance and sandstorm protection. Complete the Wind Pass Landsraad missions to unlock the blueprints.
